This being the first one in this series, I don’t know yet how exactly it’s gonna work, but I guess I’ll stick to the plan and do the customary “question/answer” thing; that should work best.

So enough with the intro, let’s get to it.

Professionalism and Preconceived Ideas

Seldom, but with some kind of quasi-frequency that makes it almost inappropriate for the IAQ category, I get these questions about the way my personal opinions affect my work. More exactly:

Question:

I would like to get a cross/angel/portrait of Jesus Christ/virgin Mary icon/other christian symbol. Is that OK with you, would you do it?

Short answer:

Yes, without hesitation.

Long Answer

While it is true that I am against religion and I believe all this thing about supernatural, almighty beings is just a malevolent bedtime story, this is my personal opinion and this is as far as it goes, at being “personal” and nothing more. I do not try to make it popular, I do not try to make others share it and I never let it come between me and the people with whom I interact professionally.

Tattooing is my best way to express my feelings and views and my work carries a lot of this “personal” in it. Being subjective —whenever possible— allows me to create the best works I’m capable of at the time.

However, tattooing is also my job, which requires a great deal of objectivity and what I call “professionalism”. I don’t always do only designs I like and I don’t always reject designs I don’t like. I am trying to be a professional and this requires a little more than proper sterilization techniques and eye-to-hand coordination.

A cross is just another symbol, like stars, Japanese kanji, Buddhist svàstikas, electric chairs, gallows and so on. I don’t remember ever refusing to use any of them in my designs, I have absolutely no reason to refuse to do a cross, upright or upside down. An angel is just another humanoid, like Spiderman, Tinker Bell, pin-up nymphs or dragon-fighting samurai. Again, absolutely no reason for me to refuse doing them; after all, as far as I’m concerned, they’re all fantastic characters, they’re all supposedly having supernatural powers. And I like fantastic, not to mention that I love drawing human beings. Same thing goes for portraits of Jesus Christ or his mom; they’re nothing but portraits and I love doing portraits! Oh, I loooooove doing portraits!!! Refusing to do a portrait of Jesus Christ would be equal to refusing to do a portrait of Yukio Mishima or Karl Marx or Adolf Hitler or even George Bush, Bill Gates or Steve Jobs… and I can’t think of any good reason —from a professional point of view— to refuse them.

My personal opinions are mine and —if conclusions based on a lifetime experience can be called “preconceived ideas”— my preconceptions too are mine alone and they stay that way. I’ve been doing this for 15 years and —although, in the past, I used to reject certain designs based solely on my feelings toward them— I believe I’ve grown up enough to be able to stay objective and focused, like a pro ought to.

So yes, if these things have a strong enough meaning to you that you wish to express through wearing a cross or the face of Jesus Christ on your skin, by all means, ask me without hesitation. I will not mock, nor make a long face and you can definitely be sure that I will give 100% of what I have to do the best design —and ink it accordingly— for you. As far as you —my precious client— are concerned, you’ll simply be asking me to tattoo you and my feelings toward the theme you choose don’t really matter, as long as I do my job properly.

Just don’t ask me to what church I go, OK? >:)

On the contrary, a Mac is absolutely necessary; and then some more.

Read on for the simple, easy steps one needs to follow in order to get this special award…

Special Edition

The first shared award in history —at least 26,000 winners and counting— and the first one that’s going to keep being awarded, continuously, to everyone who joins the fortunate mass.

Very easy to become a winner too. No special web design or marketing talents needed, no Windoze box required (on the contrary, all you need is a Mac —which is exactly what makes this a “special edition”— and a torrent client), no outstanding skills necessary. Just follow these easy, simple steps:

Launch your favorite torrent app. Anything will do.

Download bootlegged software, like “iWork ’09” or “Photo$hop ¢$4”. It’s free —fuck Appl€ and Adob€, they’re not gonna get your money today— and you can start using it right away, no authentication required.

Install the downloaded software on your machine and make sure you give your admin password when required by the installer. This is important!

Go to your preferred discussion forum and complain about the trojan you’ve just installed on your machine. Breathe through your mouth while observing that you’re not the only one; at least 26,000 other people are on your side, breathing through their mouths exactly like you do, hating everyone who trolls your threads with flames like “you had it coming to you” and worthless comments like “you can’t fix stupid”.

Panic and buy antivirus software. Or better, download pirated copies :)

And then come over here to get your award.

You don’t even need to drop by, actually; the award is yours automatically. How’s that for convenience?

For a bonus prize, spreading the word about the Mac finally becoming as vulnerable to viruses as Windoze will do. No need to know the difference between a virus and the trojan freshly installed on that box; let the pros at SecureMac and the likes worry about the details, that’s their problem ;)

Here’s a little more info about it…

I was mentioning the other day the latest Firefox beta and the cyan-tinted, monochrome PNGs <del datetime="2009-01-25T13:30:23+09:00">fuck-up</del> <ins datetime="2009-01-25T13:30:34+09:00">bug</ins> that had managed to sneak in.

Here’s what it looks like in Firefox 3.1 β2 under OS X 10.5.6 {left: PNG saved with a “Calibrated RGB Colorspace” profile; right: the same PNG saved with a “sRGB” [sRGB (IEC 61966-2.1)] profile}:

The obvious workaround is to make sure PNGs —and I assume JPEGs as well, but I’m already too bored to do a test case right now— are not saved with a “Calibrated RGB Colorspace” profile embedded. No apps that I know of do that by default —maybe just Preview.app in older versions of Leopard and Tiger— but a double-check before uploading the images won’t hurt.

Of course, this is going to be fixed sooner or later and this “workaround” won’t be needed for too long, so I guess it’s not such a big deal anyway… But it’s good to know how to avoid the bug or —worst case scenario— if it never gets fixed, how to prepare for the cyan-tinted future :)

This minor snafu aside, the latest beta brings in a lot of the good stuff so I’m really looking forward to the stable release to hit the “market”… maybe then I can finally get rid of the redundant
-webkit-
/
-moz-
shit bloating my CSS ;)

The news is all over the place: a trojan horse hidden in a bootlegged copy of iWork ’09 downloadable via P2P takes over Macs, fucks them up and uses them in an ongoing DDoS attack. It’s so all over the place that it’s not even “news” anymore.

And although I believe those suicidal free-loaders shouldn’t get any help in dealing with what they had coming to them, there are a few good people out there willing to lend a hand, so I thought I could, at least, share a link or two with those who got infected —or are being asked for help by friends or something…

I don’t care if one downloads music or movies or bootlegged software over P2P. Good for them! They probably have their reasons and —to tell the truth— I’d most likely agree with most of them too.

But if one does download pirated software from a random —untrusted, untraceable, unknown— source, gives their admin password too when installing it and then ends up with a trojan in their <samp>/usr/bin</samp> and a bunch of other shit all over the place, then I think one had it coming and should be ostracized and ignored when complaining about it.

Fortunately, there are good people out there willing to help regardless of the great stupidity that caused one’s terrifying “computer infected” experience. Although I still believe kamikaze free-loaders shouldn’t get any help —at least not for free— I have to agree that there might’ve been some sound justifications that led them to get the trojan-infected iWork ’09 package and, subsequently, fuck up their Macs.

So —just because I do envy these generous people willing to help out simply because they’re good— here’s a link to the easiest, safest, least technically challenging method: iWorksServices.clix. Your’re gonna need CLIX —if you don’t already have it— and you’re probably gonna need to do a little reading before anything else, but it’s worth it and will definitely save you a lot of trouble.

If you’re one of those affected by this trojan, do it now!

And next time you get something from BitTorrent and the likes, think twice before giving your admin password. Being on a Mac makes you a lot safer than being under a Windows box, but it doesn’t do it magically ;)

Update: 6000 More Idiots

There’s aanother one… and it doesn’t come as a surprise at all. There will definitely be more and more, as the number of free-loader idiots is growing (currently, a little over twenty six thousands and counting).

I am Jack’s total lack of surprise.

As they keep saying, verba volant, scripta manent and —you know— later on I might wanna have a link to point to when I do the “told you so” taunt… so, what better way than to just write ’em down and slap an URL on top? >:D

Web Design Stuff

First things first, yeah, the redesign for this blog is done; it’s been done for quite a while now but I forgot to tell about it. The header graphic is still a place holder —couldn’t come up with anything shiny and cute— but it’s just eye candy, so it can wait until I find something better. I think I managed to clean up all the posts too, no more XHTML stuff to fuck up the validation —if that matters anymore. Bottom line, the redesign is done, everything’s black and sexy, all tags are closed and the CSS purrs softly ;)

And since I was at fiddling with them anyway, in the process I managed to redesign the portal, the photo archives and some of the other projects too. Just because I was feeling bad for neglecting them for such a long time :)

Fooled around with this old–new thing called HTML 5 too —out of curiosity mostly— but decided against it for now; it’s not ready for proper use. I mean, it might be ready, but the browsers aren’t ready yet, so that’s something I’ll postpone until the internet grows up.

Speaking of browsers, the two main dissidents have just released pre-release previews [sic!] of their next versions, namely Firefox 3.1 β2 and Opera 10.00 α. To which —for a change— I actually have something nice to say :)

Both, a massive improvement to the current stable versions, both a definite step forward… at least as far as CSS support goes (which is pretty much all I care about when I talk about web browsers).

Firefox 3.1 β2

Among others, finally support for web fonts, through the
@font-face
thing and proper display of
text-shadow
, which I applaud :)

Then, the implementation of shadows for block elements, which is another thing only Safari has been doing so far. A little half-assed though, since it’s being done via the proprietary
-moz-box-shadow
(exactly in the same half-assed way Safari uses App£€’s proprietary
-webkit-box-shadow
) but at least they got it right. Opera is not there yet, but hopefully one day they’ll catch up too… Anyway, proprietary, standard, it doesn’t really matter right now; the feature is there —which shows it can be done— and I’m pretty sure these details will be polished later on, once 3.1 exits “beta”.

To my surprise —well, not really, but I didn’t expect Firefox to beat Safari at this— there is now support for the “nth” family of selectors (
:nth-child
,
:nth-last-child
,
:nth-of-type
,
:nth-last-of-type
,
:first-of-type
,
:last-of-type
,
:only-of-type
and the likes). Pretty neat; this —in theory— will be a great deal of help in getting rid of a ton of markup bloat; Opera does it too —incompletely, but accurately for the most part— so, as soon as the WebKit team catches up, I guess this is really gonna mean something.

One blooper though… Not CSS-related, but immediately noticeable: certain PNGs are displayed in a cyan-tinted monochrome. Something to do with the graphics engine —I don’t know for sure— but it’s definitely a fuck-up and I hope they fix quickly.

Opera 10.00 α

One major thing and, as far as I’m concerned, the most important on the list, is the ability to display alpha transparency through RGBA and HSLA color values, via the <var>[…]</var>
color:rgba(
<var>[…]</var> and, respectively <var>[…]</var>
color:hsla(
<var>[…]</var> rules. This is awesome and it’s one of those “what the fuck took you so long?!” things, since Safari and Firefox have been doing it for quite some time now and translating RGBA values to RGB just for the sake of Opera was time consuming and pretty frustrating :)

They’ve got support for web fonts too now (same
@font-face
as above) and this is cool, but I wonder, how long before copyright lawsuits will make these browser makers “fall back” to not supporting this feature?

Anyway, the new Presto 2.2 has got other tricks up its sleeve, but most of them don’t interest me yet and —for what I care— I’ll soon be able to design my websites to look pretty in Opera too.

So it’s all good.

Except, of course, for that piece of shit Int€rn€t €xp£or€r, which brings me to:

M$I€ 6.x

Or
<!--[if lte IE 6]>
, which is exactly how I’m gonna stop supporting M$I€ 6. Most of my websites are already plain vanilla when viewed in versions older than 7, except for the main sites for the studio but those are going to follow pretty soon, as soon as I have enough time to go through those style sheets again and come up with a naughty nag for the M$I€ 6 users >:)

I€ 6 is dead, everybody agrees… I don’t know why I should waste anymore time butchering my CSS just for the sake of that piece of shit…

Goggle’s Chrome is still a half-assed, incomplete job so there’s nothing worthy mentioning about it and, since I already seem to have exhausted everything nice I had to say, time to move on to the “told you so” forecast…

Politics

More exactly, the idiotic frenzy I keep seeing on TV and the internet, about this “historical” event that just happened: the enthroning of Obama.

I can’t say “I’d hate to rain on their parade” because, if I did hate it, I simply wouldn’t write this. Truth is, their parade asks to be pissed on, for two simple reasons:

The incessant broadcasting of American politics turned my TV into the most boring and annoying piece of hardware in the house. I switch to the news channel so I can watch some “news” and there it is, on all channels, the big herd waving flags and screaming “yes, we can” like there’s no tomorrow. A fucking circus…

The credulity of these people is so unbelievable, so un-fucking-believable, that it makes me lose the last tiny bit of hope I had left… Which, in turn, ruins my day, so I guess this makes for a good enough reason, right?

So I’m standing here, pissing on their parade and asking: Do these people really believe anything is going to change?!? They’ve just gotten a new president, nothing more.

A new name and a new face, a new “Bush”. Nothing more.

The head of the government, not their friend, not their ally, not their representative; just the spokesman for a corporation whose sole purpose is to keep the masses obedient and suck them dry.

“Yes, we can” my ass.

Big words, brain-washing, miracle pills. As long as the war goes on and Bush is not being judged and convicted for the massacre, as long as there are military bases in Okinawa and everywhere else, as long as they spend more money for missiles than cancer research, as long as their economic fuck-ups make people all over the world lose their jobs, as long as you can’t hear half of Eminem’s lyrics because of a self-righteous piece of shit censoring away behind his desk at MTV’s, as long as people have to give up their money to fund the government through this yakuza-like mulct system called “tax”, as long as they continue to make so much fuzz about the new president being black while casually mentioning that their society has overcome its color and race problems, while the governments keep tightening their grip on our necks in the name of whatever greater cause, the president is nothing but just another spokesman for the tyrants. The enemy, the one who brings the bad news on TV, the one who smiles at you while you bend over to take another one in the ass.

Why have people forgotten all these? How can they forget so easily?

Has all this flag-waving sight such a strong, overwhelming hypnotic effect that people not only forget what the government really means, but they even applaud and cheer it?

Has Bush brought them so much desperation that the mere perspective of not having him around anymore is enough to blind them and intoxicate them to the point of actually celebrating the enthronement of a new one?

Color me stupid, but I don’t get it.

I know one thing though, and I’ll definitely taunt people, as soon as the present tense becomes accurate, with this: absolutely nothing is going to change.

Taxes will continue to be taken from people and, most likely, will grow too. The number of jobless and homeless people will continue to grow, while the mercenaries will keep dying in the name of lies and money. Censorship will become more and more aggressive, to the point that they’ll probably have to reinvent the language and the so-called anti-terrorist measures will keep eating away at our rights and freedoms, while the internet will lose more and more of its independence and neutrality. Religion —oh, this fucking plague— will continue to cause death and hatred while, unfortunately, the number of bible-huggers will keep growing. Costly computer generated graphics will continue to maintain the “man on the Moon” lie, while enormous pressure will be put on the Chinese to not expose the fact that there’s never been a stars and stripes flag on the lunar surface.

Nothing is going to change, on the contrary.

And I hate myself for being the asshole who pisses on their parade, but the idiocy and credulity of so many people has become unbearable.

Religion

More like a “notes to myself” aside —carefully trimmed down to something that won’t make absolutely everyone hate me— but I have to let it out so here it is:

Someone who thanks some god for their achievements and does so before —or without— thanking their parents is an ingrate. An ungrateful drone.

Someone who attributes their own achievements to some god’s will and not to their own efforts and virtuosity is a fucking idiot. The same someone who attributes their fuck-ups to Satan or their own weak nature and forgets to blame god is a fucking hypocrite.

Someone who misspells “god” on purpose (where by “on purpose” I mean “out of fear of celestial punishment”) while bashing your head in for misspelling “your” and “you’re” is another kind of hypocrite, a special kind of hypocrite who deserves having their head bashed in… at least figuratively >:D

Is a friend really a friend when he won’t believe what you’re saying unless you swear to his god, while knowing that to you that doesn’t really mean shit?

Ugh, trim, trim, trim, the world ain’t ready yet and the sound of fingernails on a blackboard annoys me too, so it’s time to hit “Post” and get some sleep. I’ll be back with the “told you so” elbow-to-face move sooner than you think, I promise :)

But before I sign off, I can’t help but wondering: how the fuck do I always manage to produce “hate” lists longer than “love” ones‥?

The redesign is pretty much done, except for the header graphic and a few tiny details here and there. I still need to see how it looks in FIrefox and Opera and then go through the older posts and get rid of the XHTML–specific stuff, but otherwise that’s about all I can do today.

Tomorrow I reopen the studio and I have a feeling this is the last chance I have to sit at the computer for more than a few minutes at a time, so I think it’s alright to say I’m almost done with this…

Yup, I think I’ve done it.
Again :)

Switched back to HTML 4, ported the template I’ve been using on the Japanese blog and modified it a little to make it match the colour scheme of the main website —together with other tiny tweaks here and there— and to keep it from breaking apart until I manage to remove all XHTML 1.1 stuff I have in the older posts, added Lightbox for some of the images in the articles and, generally, fiddled with every possible line of code I could find :)
Again, the themes management got really good in WordPress 2.7; that helped a lot. Except for the search pages and the 404s, I could preview all the changes without the need to switch to the new theme. Fucking awesome feature!

The header image is not ready, I will replace it with a proper one as soon as I’m sure everything looks alright in other browsers too (so far I’ve only checked it in Safari).
Of course, M$I€ gets the finger; not gonna waste my time with that piece of shit.

What’s left to do is going through all the posts and get rid of the trailing slashes and xml:attributes, fixing a couple of broken links and stuff like that.
And then install Firefox and Opera, poke around to see how the CSS behaves and fix all those little incompatibilities too.
This is going to happen tonight, because tomorrow is the big day and —after I reopen the studio— I have a feeling this is the last chance I have to actually sit at the computer for more than 10 minutes at a time :)

As usual, if you happen to find anything weird or broken, let Dali know about it ;)

<ins datetime="2009-01-06T19:07:11+09:00">Of course it won’t validate 100% :\ WordPress outputs XHTML 1.0 so I get lots of warnings about the trailing slashes in empty elements (
<br>
,
<hr>
,
<img>
and the likes) because this is supposed to validate as HTML 4.01 Strict, but otherwise it’s all good… I mean, it’s valid, but with those stupid errors. An XHTML to HTML plugin should be easy to write, but why bother?</ins>

<ins datetime="2009-01-06T19:13:20+09:00">Off topic: Yay, the latest ACP is out! Gotta update. Web design can wait :D</ins>

I wish you all a great new year and all the best!

Right after this, I’m going to take care —finally— of this very blog, redesign the whole thing and fall back to HTML 4… so I apologies in advance for all the ugly innards you’re probably going to see for the next couple of days…

Before anything else, a happy new year to you all and all the bestest wishes for 2009! I hope everybody had a great time on the new year’s and nobody had a too harsh hangover :)

From the e-mails I’ve gotten so far it seems most had a good time and I really hope it goes the same for those from whom I haven’t heard yet.

Two more days until I reopen the studio, it seems like plenty of time to get my ass in gears and do something about this blog.

Meaning that, right after this, I’m going to start the “redesign” thing.

Which means you’re probably going to see a bunch of entrails, the ugly innards and hideous HTML tags showing through the skin, but please bear with me; it’s not gonna take more than a day or two. I’m not doing a full redesign from scratch, I’m just porting the one I have on the Japanese blog —with a few tiny modifications here and there— so it’s hopefully not going to take too long.

Anyway, if you come across broken parts, don’t worry; the blog isn’t broken, it’s just ugly… or unfinished ;)

So yeah, I’ll post some more after I’m done with it.

Update:

One plus: The themes management in 2.7 is such a cool feature!!! I can preview the theme I’m working on without actually switching to it until it’s done. Saves me a lot of sweat and time!!! Pretty fucking cool!

One minus: my webhost seems to be having problems, again, with them servers… Slow like shit, refreshing one fucking page to see the changes eats up a lot of time. I hope they fix it soon!

It’s been a great year, full of everything with sugar on top. Started out with rush and hassle, went through that shitty frustrating period during the hunt for a new location for the studio but then, from June on, it’s been absolutely awesome.

I’ve met a bunch of great people and I’ve had the opportunity to do a bunch of great tattoos. Couldn’t be any more satisfied!

From what people are telling me, the new studio is a success, so I guess I can relax now and stop polishing the floors all day long :)

Those of you who haven’t seen it yet, you’re welcome any time! The schedule is —as usual— a bitch, so I’ll probably make you wait a little until we can meet, but still, do visit sometime. I’ve got sugarless black Coke, tea and beers ;)

And tequila :D

I hope the next year is going to be even better. I mean, I know it’s gonna be better —it always is— but at least I hope there’ll be no reason for the frustration and annoyance I had to go through before the move.

As I write this, I’m getting ready to update, one last time, the photo galleries and then, hopefully, get my hands dirty and do a little bit of work on this weblog too. I’ve been talking about switching back to plain old HTML for about a year, but now I’m really gonna do it. The new template is on my desktop, I’m porting the design of the Japanese version to English and, in the process, trying to get the code up-to-date too. Lots of things changed since the last time I made it —by the way, I just upgraded to 2.7 a couple of days ago— and it’s about time I stop talking and actually do something about it.

But fuck this, right now I’m in no mood for techie talk; all I think about is the huge amount of sleep I finally am going to get, the huge amounts of tequila I hopefully am going to have and the loneliness I probably am going to feel until the 6th, when I’ll finally be able to get back to work.

It’s been a great year, the next one is going to be even better! I hope it’s gonna be as good for all of you too!

Will try to stay within reach these next days —if my laptop doesn’t pull a death-joke on me— so don’t hesitate to send me that “happy new year” mail, OK? ;)

In the meanwhile, all my best wishes to you all and a very happy new year! May it be the bestest year ever ;)

Everything is in place, the studio is ready.

In the morning I’ll be back to work but, meanwhile, I have a couple of photos to show you, a sneak peek at the new Graphic Tribe…

First Day in Ebisu

Yes, the new studio is officially open. Well, it’s the 21st just because the clock went past midnight a couple of hours ago but, technically, I’ll have to wait for the morning to actually open it and receive my first clients at the new place ;)

I’ve spent most of the last two days finishing up all preparations and, once I figured everything was in place, I took a couple of pictures too; but I couldn’t wait until tomorrow to show them to you, so that’s what this post is about :).

The one above is taken from the entrance; that is what you see when you come in. In the foreground, the “reception desk” —I mean, my Mac :) — and in the background, the workspace —bed and everything. Behind that there’s another desk I set up for drawing.

The one below shows a view of the studio from the “waiting area”; a better view of the bed and the drawing table.

Everything has been moved around and arranged a little different from what I had planned first, especially the bed, in order to allow me to find the best, most comfortable position during work. I’ll probably rearrange them a little more along the way, once I figure what’s needed, but I’m going to have to spend a few days actually working, so I can get a feel. In any case, the whole thing will most likely stay like it is now, except for those few centimeters I’ll probably need if there’s not enough elbow-room.

Last one is a view from behind the drawing desk, showing the bed in the foreground and —in the background, to the right— the “waiting area”. The black door around the corner is the entrance (the one with the mirror is the toilet).

So what do you think? Pretty cool, isn’t it?

You’ll have to actually visit once —these photos don’t really do it justice— but I tell you: during those cool breeze days of the autumn, this is going to be one relaxing ambiance!

I’m sure you’ll like it ;)

Off to get some sleep now, tomorrow is the big day.
